Sultan Ahmet’s imperial mosque is still a working mosque with fascinating tile work — 21,043 tiles, to be precise — in every shade of blue.
Emperors have been crowned here, refugees have taken shelter here, treasures have been hidden here.As I said, it is technically a museum now, but you can feel the life within the walls.On the other side of Sultanahmet Park, the red is juxtaposed with the blue.
The mosaics are beautiful and reflect the periods in history during which they were created. Your site should be required reading for anyone who’s thinking of visiting the country.You’ve really succeeded in capturing the magic of those two mosques.Thanks.

The sheer scale of the open space in the main area will leave you feeling tiny. Hagia Sophia served as such until July 2020, when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared that it would be converted back into a mosque.Conflict over Hagia Sophia is by no means new. Sultanahmet is fascinating and a fantastic place .. And quality photos .. Oldies but goldies…Thanks, Leon. It was created to be a purely Muslim structure, in contrast with Hagia Sophia which had a mixed heritage. The majority of the building’s interior (as seen today) dates back to this period, with the exception of several large christian mosaics which were recently uncovered.The building served as one of the largest and most impressive mosques in the Muslim world for the next several hundred years.

No small accomplishment.Amazingly the entire structure was built in less than 10 years, reportedly by a work crew of some 10,000 people, by the decree of Justinian I of Constantinople. There really is something special about those buildings.Thanks, mate.
