It’s also a nice way to have company if you are travelling solo.I am a ‘Wanderer’ with G Adventures and they have great tours of Turkey. When I travel internationally, I always get insurance.

The very suggestion conjures the demon of an all-powerful Israel lobby that has turned the US Congress into its pawn. Turkey has waded into the Syrian quagmire, it has the Kurdish problem to contend with, it is conducting risky adventures in Libya, and it is stirring unrest in the Eastern Mediterranean. I am planning to publish photobook about my visit to Turkey. I hope you got the answer to the question!! I’m glad it won’t be cold enough for snow while I’m there though!I’m excited for you! It is an amazing city!

Sultan Ahmet’s imperial mosque is still a working mosque with fascinating tile work — 21,043 tiles, to be precise — in every shade of blue.

Emperors have been crowned here, refugees have taken shelter here, treasures have been hidden here.As I said, it is technically a museum now, but you can feel the life within the walls. On the other side of Sultanahmet Park, the red is juxtaposed with the blue.

The mosaics are beautiful and reflect the periods in history during which they were created. Your site should be required reading for anyone who’s thinking of visiting the country. You’ve really succeeded in capturing the magic of those two mosques.Thanks.

Your photos are stunning., makes me wanna pack up my bags and head on out there.I hope you get a chance to get there soon. The mosque embodies the epitome of Byzantine-influenced Ottoman construction. Instead, the inside of the “museum” the current dictator of a Turkey Erdogàn began Qur’anic recitations during Holy Week in this yeAR.Both of the Mosques are beautiful and breathtaking.. something I would love to explore <3On a scale of 1 to 10 (or 1 to 100), how would you rate the overall beauty of Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, and also, if you can, of the Taj Mahal in India? This is the website of travel writer, Michael Turtle. I had trouble capturing them from outside because there are lots of things in the way but there were so many wonderful angles inside. The sheer scale of the open space in the main area will leave you feeling tiny. Hagia Sophia served as such until July 2020, when President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan declared that it would be converted back into a mosque.Conflict over Hagia Sophia is by no means new. Sultanahmet is fascinating and a fantastic place .. And quality photos .. Oldies but goldies…Thanks, Leon. It was created to be a purely Muslim structure, in contrast with Hagia Sophia which had a mixed heritage. The majority of the building’s interior (as seen today) dates back to this period, with the exception of several large christian mosaics which were recently uncovered. The building served as one of the largest and most impressive mosques in the Muslim world for the next several hundred years.

Thank you for sharing this one.It most definitely is!

No small accomplishment.Amazingly the entire structure was built in less than 10 years, reportedly by a work crew of some 10,000 people, by the decree of Justinian I of Constantinople. There really is something special about those buildings. Thanks, mate.

Remnants of both the Christian and Islamic faiths are preserved throughout the complex.

I am a travel blogger and photographer. I see similarities but can’t put my finger on them. The first name of the Church was ‘’Megale Ekklesia’’ which means ‘’the Grand Church’’. The tiles and beautifully painted calligraphy work has made the Blue Mosque one of Istanbul’s leading tourist attractions.Every inch of the building’s interior is covered in rich, padded carpets, beautiful stained-glass windows, or intricately decorated Islamic decorations and calligraphic script. The Hagia Sophia was turned into a mosque in 1453 after the conquest of Istanbul, then known as Constantinople, by the Ottoman ruler, Sultan Mehmet II. Hagia Sophia is a former Greek Orthodox patriarchal basilica (church), later an imperial mosque, and now a museum in Istanbul, Turkey. To Turks who do not support Erdoğan, his turning the Hagia Sophia museum back into a mosque constitutes a flagrant rebuff of Atatürk and his secularist legacy. Just a year ago, Erdoğan inaugurated the Çamlıca Mosque on the Asian side of Istanbul—a huge complex designed to accommodate more than 60,000 worshippers per day. It took time, however, for opposition to the site’s status to coalesce. As the bridge between Europe and Asia, it has been the battleground for physical and ideological warfare over the centuries. But a constant struggle is unsustainable. But it’s also a unique opportunity to see behind the curtain of a billion-dollar UN bureaucracy and phase it out.The concept of “settler colonialism” has been applied with almost unique vehemence against Israel.

The demand to return the cathedral to its mosque status took on symbolic weight as an act of defiance toward the “Hellenic enemy” that had taken over Cyprus. I especially liked the ones of Aya Sophia, my favorite building in the world, in the snow. Hagia Sophia

In Erdoğan’s view, turning Hagia Sophia back into a mosque is a Turkish victory and a source of national pride during a time of great turmoil. An important element to consider with regard to this issue is sovereignty.

It is also about the Islamic world. From the inside and the outside, it looks like a mosque and it’s hard to imagine the cathedral form. The low-hanging lights in the main hall add a glowing brilliance to the room, while the enormous dome is one of the best examples of Byzantine architecture. The high ceilings – higher than most religious shrines in the world – make you feel insignificant in the presence of a deity. It’s not hard to understand why this landmark has always been considered one of the most important in Istanbul. Hagia Sophia is one of the most famous and recognisable buildings in the world. It already has a great many. Amazing history that I really had no clue about until on the ground exploring and learning!I was just in Istanbul a few months ago, and I too was fascinated how such structures could be built so long ago.
